Brian Krist
Biography
Brian Krist, Esq. was elected as a Regent of the University of the State of New York on March 4, 2025 by concurrent resolution of the New York State Legislature, and took his at-large seat immediately upon his election.
Born and raised on the East Side of Manhattan, Regent Krist has led a life of public service, rising through the ranks from unpaid intern to agency executive prior to becoming a Regent. His service with the New York State Education Department began with his March 2016 appointment by the Board of Regents to serve as a public member on the New York State Board for Certified Shorthand Reporting. The Regents re-appointed Regent Krist to the CSR Board, and his colleagues elected him chair, in 2021. The Regents also appointed Regent Krist to the New York State Board for Public Accountancy as a public member and re-appointed him in 2024. His service on both boards has since concluded.
Regent Krist currently serves as an associate court attorney in the New York State Unified Court System. He is also an active academic, having been a Senior Fellow at New York Law School until his election as a Regent, and presently serves on the adjunct faculty of Montclair State University. Previously, Regent Krist served with the New York City Law Department, the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board, New York City Administration for Children’s Services and the New York City Department of Investigation. During his service with the New York City Law Department, Regent Krist was seconded to the New York City Mayor's Office of Special Enforcement, and was seconded to the New York State Attorney General's Office during his service with the Department of Investigation. Regent Krist was also appointed as a public member of the Street Life Committee of Manhattan Community Board 8.
His personal awards include the New York City Law Department General Litigation Division Chief Award (2 awards); the New York Department of Investigation Outstanding Performance on a Major Investigation Award (3 awards); a New York Law School Public Service Certificate; a Charles H. Revson Foundation/New York University Law Student Public Interest Fellowship; a Washington College Outstanding Community Service Recognition, and a Washington College Center for Service Learning Service Recognition. Regent Krist was also granted membership into Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society, and Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, prior to attending law school.
Regent Krist earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and American Studies and a Master of Arts in History from Washington College, and a Juris Doctor from New York Law School. He is also a 2015 graduate of the New York City Leadership Institute and an elected Fellow of the New York State Academy for Public Administration. Regent Krist and his wife, a clinical nurse specialist, are raising their daughters in Manhattan.
