ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION
Chair’s Remarks: Regent Tilles welcomed everyone and opened the meeting. Regent Tilles briefly discussed his thoughts on building the arts into the accountability system.
Deputy Commissioner Jeffrey Cannell introduced State Librarian Bernard Margolis and welcomed Mr. Margolis back after an extended absence.
State Librarian Margolis provided a report on the “road map” for developing a statewide vision for library service, using the report from the Advisory Council on Libraries, Creating the Future: A 2020 Vision and Plan for Library Service in New York State- Next Steps as the basis for the analysis. The report was delivered to the Committee at its April 2012 meeting. Mr. Margolis indicated that the first step will be outreach to stakeholders, not to acquire additional recommendations, but to help develop the roadmap for developing and implementing the vision.
The committee discussed the road map and discussed the importance of libraries generally in developing literate communities and in closing the achievement gap.
