Should the Regents approve the appointment of Regent Emeritus Saul B. Cohen as an Adjunct Member of the Regents Review Committee?

This question will come before the full Board at its January 2011 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken. 

Procedural History

Pursuant to statute, the Regents Review Committee, when it sits to conduct professional discipline hearings, consists of three members, with at least one member being a current member of the New York State Board of Regents. The balance of the Committee is obtained from the roster of those appointed by the Board of Regents as Adjunct Members of the Regents Review Committee.  Adjunct Members of the Regents Review Committee are appointed to serve for fixed terms.

Background Information

Regent Emeritus Cohen served honorably and well for 17 years on the Board of Regents, including many occasions when he served as Chairperson of the Regents Review Committee.  His professional judgment and experience would make him an ideal candidate for serving with the Regent Chairperson of the Regents Review Committee in hearings and for making recommendations in professional misconduct proceedings. 

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Board of Regents appoint Regent Emeritus Saul B. Cohen as an Adjunct Member of the Regents Review Committee.

Timetable for Implementation

The term of service for the recommended appointment of Regent Emeritus Cohen would begin on January 11, 2011 and end on December 31, 2012.
